my comment for the easter post over at scp

here are a couple of realizations that have come to me lately that seem relative to the discussion

1. Christ never defines sin in the gospels accounts, so we should be careful when we go to pass judgement on those that have a different understanding

2. "People seem to think that by posting in threads and agreeing with other people they are changing the world. They are not. They are posting in threads online. The universe will not be altered by forum threads, even those which are very wry. Being outraged online is a form of entertainment, and refreshing a thread to receive a hit of consensus packs the thrill of genuine activism without requiring any sweat." - penny-arcade

i don't agree with number 2 completely, but they make a good point. the blogs are good for seeing that you're not a lone crazy in the night and they can be used to refine one's position (if there just weren't the random troll encounters . . . .). in short, talking is good. but only if it leads to action. i am still defaulting to being indignant over actually doing something.

we went to a church on easter. looking back, it was as if i was 8 years old again and my wife was trying to drag a child to church "dress nice! are you really going to wear that?!" and me stomping about waving my fist in the air and mumbling something about "the principles of it" when i realized that i'm still a part of the system; i'm still not doing anything more (and maybe even less) to make this world a better place than the people in the church that i'm about to visit.

don't get me wrong; i still think the church is broken (or, for those that enjoy being snide, the church is a chocolate coated placebo). but if all i have are good intentions, who am i feeding?

i would like to think that i'm still recovering from burn out and trying to figure things out for myself after all these years. hopefully that's where i am.

Paul refers to sin as anything that is not of faith. I think that's a good definition, because it means that, from the snarkiest, most self-righteous among us to the legalistic, most, er, self-righteous among us, we're all equally screwed.

I don't entirely agree with #2, either. These forums are good places to rethink and refine one's views and, just as important, learn to better communicate ideas. World changing starts with individual changing. But it can't stop with discussion.

I did not attend services on Sunday. I baked bread, and made candy, and joined the family for a meal in the afternoon. It was a great day.

Found your blog through Dorsey's blog...good stuff.

We attended Easter services, but on Saturday night and in jeans. The sanctuary was completely full and we ended up in the overflow/fellowship hall/venue. What an interesting contrast to when I was a kid and all the fanfare on Easter Sunday morning.

I must say that starting my blog and finding many other blogging kindred spirits has been very good for me. I agree with Dorsey on the "rethinking and refining one's views".

I think the American way is to feel like you are making change by doing nothing. The most popular way to do this is to throw money at a cause. I want people to send money to the coalition to help white guys over 30 who dont know what they want. Just kidding
